Nearby, the real Fortrex was hastily rolling away from the village of Pieburg. Once again, the knights had gone to visit the town with good intentionsâbut were quickly chased away by angry townsfolk. Standing atop the castleâs front parapet, the five real knights ducked as villagers lobbed food and trash at them.
âHas everyone in this kingdom turned on us?â Clay yelled out. He ducked just in time to avoid a piece of pie hitting him in the face. It flew over his head and splatted against the castleâs stone wall instead.
âI donât know,â Macy said sadly. âBut I think we need protection from the people weâre supposed to protect!â
Lance folded over, clutching his stomach as if he was going to be ill. He sobbed, âGasp! What is happening to me? Am I dying?â He breathed quickly, in and out, letting panic set in. âThis feeling! I have never felt it before!â
Aaron felt bad for his fellow knight, but also kind of liked that Lance had to taste a slice of humble pie. âItâs called âbeing unpopular,ââ he told him.
âWhat?â Lance screeched. âYou mean ⦠this is what it feels like when no one likes you?â He folded over and continued to sob.
Suddenly, a full-sized pie came whizzing through the air. Axl reached one of his meaty paws into the air and grabbed it as it flew past. He happily gulped it down, then said, âMmm ⦠I love the angry Village of Pieburg!â
The knights raced into the Fortrexâs command room, eager to talk to Merlok 2.0 to see if the wizard knew what was happening around the Realm.
âMerlok, have you learned any more information about these strange attacks weâre being blamed for?â Macy asked, addressing their leaderâs bright orange hologram form.
Merlok 2.0 seemed to be fading in and out of focus more than usual. It was almost as though his circuit was shorting or losing signal. âNo,â the wizard said. âBut Iâve experienced an unusual amount of activity in my systems. Itâs made me quite itchy.â The wizardly hologram scratched an ear, then his armpit, and leaned down to itch his foot.
âUh,â Clay said, averting his eyes. âMaybe you just need to shower. Or, uh, de-frag or something.â
âPerhaps,â Merlok 2.0 said, lifting his staff over one shoulder to get at an itch on his back. The orange hologram wiggled and wobbled as Merlok 2.0 struggled to fight the itch spreading across his whole body. âI contacted Ava at the Academy and she thinks someone might be âhackingâ into my system.â
Clay and Macy exchanged a look. âWe need to get back to the Knightsâ Academy, and have Robin and Ava run some diagnostics.â
âYesâdiagnostics,â Merlok 2.0 said, scratching even more violently. The poor wizard just couldnât seem to hit the right spot. âAnd perhaps a little digital flea powder!â
